Picking Locks
Lock systems have progressed over the years, yet they are still basically the same. Picking a lock can be fun, but if you are in an emergency situation, call a professional.
1. To Master It, You Must Know How It Works
Most locks have a cylinder and tumbler pins. There is one set of pins in the top to prevent the cylinder from turning. A second set of pins are in the bottom and are pushed up by a key. In turn, they push up the top pins and the cylinder can be turned.
2. The Right Tools
Having the right tools can make any job easier no matter what you are doing. You will need a pick and a torque wrench.
3. Insert Tension Wrench
Insert the tension wrench into the bottom of the lock. You will use this wrench to turn the lock.
4. Clockwise or Counter-Clockwise
In order to turn the lock, you need to know which way it turns. Test the lock with the torque wrench, whichever way is the easiest, that is the way the lock turns.
5. Pressure Is Key
Apply pressure to the lock like a key would with the torque wrench. You will not get the right pressure at first, but keep trying.
6. The Picking
Get familiar with the pins. See how much pressure is on the bottom pins from the top pins.
7. Feel Resistance
Find the pin that gives the most resistance. The pin with the most resistance will be the first pin to manipulate.
8. Set The Pin
Push the pin up until the top pin is in place and you hear a small click.
9. Repeat
Repeat steps 7 and 8 until all pins are in place.
10. Turn The Cylinder
You now have a picked lock.
